From Friedrich Krummacher, a German pastor in the 1800’s we find the following excerpt on the atrocity of war,
There will be no end to wars and rumors of wars in the world till the longed-for time arrives, when according the prophecy of Zechariah, “there shall be upon the bells of the horses, Holiness unto the LORD, and there shall be no more the Canaanites in the house of the Lord of Hosts.” War stands in manifest opposition to the original order established by the Creator, for God does not wish that His children, “created in His image” should tear and destroy one another, but that they should help one another with the hands of love. The “angels of peace” may well weep bitterly, when they look down from their blessed heights on our battlefields, while we, perhaps in the very sight of them, weave laurel-wreaths and sing songs of triumph. These blood-red fields of battle are witnesses how dreadful is yet the power which sin, the mother of war, exercises on the earth.

Lord, give us hearts that will not tear and destroy one another but will love one another in word and in deed! Spare this sinful world, bent on destroying itself, for the purposes of your saving grace and to serve your glory now and forever.
