Christian submission

Revisiting Girolamo Zanchi and his The Spiritual Marriage Between Christ and His Church he unpacks the duties of husbands and wives and emphasizes the demand of submission for the wife.  The spiritual side of submission is expounded with regard to faith and repentance in the following paragraphs. With regard to the submission of ‘faith’

If the duty of the wife is to undertake to be submissive to her husband, just as the body to its head, then first we owe faith to our Bridegroom, whereby let us truly believe that Christ is our Bridegroom and we are loved by Him and that whatsoever He promises, He will fulfill.  For no one freely remains submissive to him whom he mistrusts and by whom he does not believe he is loved.

A bit later with regard to the submission of ‘repentance’

From here the sixth duty follows, namely, perpetual repentance.  If we sin because of infirmity or out of ignorance, let us immediately, with the greatest humility of soul, run back to our Bridegroom and beg His pardon for our guilt.  For true submission requires this, and it proceeds from true faith and delight and from a humble soul and sprit.

I find the relating of faith and repentance to submission illuminating!  Our proper place before the bridegroom is one of submission and it is found and returned to through active faith and repentance.  Our entire lives should be marked by these graces and gifts of the Holy Spirit.
